Elementary Boundaries and Configurations Review

Current Status: District administration is following up on approved action items from the School Board Meeting held on May 13, 2024.

District administration should review the assignment of Brickhill students to Brown School. That review must begin with securing input from Brickhill families while ensuring language accessibility in these communications. If any school assignment changes are made as a result of this process, all current Brickhill students will be allowed to complete their elementary education at Brown School.

The district should ensure that schools with disproportionate percentages of economically disadvantaged students are provided more resources – including staffing – to support student learning with a full report to the Board from the Superintendent by August 2024.

District administration should ensure that the Board is informed about the following during the 2024-25 school year:

  • The potential for Pre-K expansion within the resource constraints of the district.

  • The potential for a districtwide PTA.

  • Strategic planning in 2024-25 that ensures community involvement that is reflective of the

diversity of the SPSD community. The administration should enlist the support of a strategic

planning consultant experienced in engaging multilingual families and families of color.

The Board should develop a new policy that would require that the Board review and approve attendance zones every three years. This policy should also require that district administration annually report the impact of attendance zones on the demographic compositions of elementary schools by November 30 each year.

The district shall conduct an analysis of attendance zones and viable elementary grade-level configurations with guidance from a consultant selected by a committee to include the Superintendent, two Board members and two residents approved by the Board with findings of this analysis presented to the Board in a public workshop by January 30, 2025.

District administration, with participation (minimally) of two Board members, two residents and a vote of the Board will select a consultant to assist in garnering information about magnet programs that foster innovation and equity, and about controlled choice programs. The findings and the proposal, should be presented to the board by January 30, 2025.
