Superintendent Matheney has spent more than three decades in education. He began his career as a high school social studies teacher and eventually became principal of one of New Jersey's largest schools – South Brunswick High School – with nearly 3,000 students. During his tenure there, the school was designated a National School of Character and named to Newsweek's list of Best American High Schools. The Superintendent later served as a senior official for the New Jersey Department of Education and founding executive director of the Philadelphia Academy of School Leaders. He earned a Bachelor of Arts with honors from Princeton University and a Master of Arts in Educational Administration and Policy from the University of Michigan.

Johanna Prince has been in education for more than 20 years in a variety of roles - classroom teacher, higher education leadership, building administration and district administration.  She earned her undergraduate degree at Colby College, her Masters in Education from University of New England and her doctorate from the University of Maine.  Her doctoral research focused on leveraging 1:1 technology for multilingual learners.  She feels fortunate  to work in South Portland School Department where there is strong community support for education and rich student diversity.

Kat Cox was hired in 1996 to develop a program for students with Autism in the public school. She taught that program at Skillin School for 4 years when she was hired as the Assistant Director of Instructional Support for the district. In 2007 Kat was hired as the Director of Instructional Support.  Prior to coming to South Portland Kat worked in two private non-profit agencies that served children with disabilities in both a teacher and administrator capacity.  Kat received her bachelor’s degree in Special Education and Regular Education from Keene State College in New Hampshire.  She later received her Master's in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern Maine where she obtained her administrative certificates as both a K-12 Principal and a Special Education Director.  Kat feels fortunate to have spent more than 30 years working with and planning for students with disabilities.

Sonia Croft has worked as the Assistant Director of Special Education in South Portland since 2017.  Sonia has held roles as an Assistant Director of Special Education at MSAD 6; and a Special Education Instructional & Behavior Strategist, as well as Special Education Teacher at Cape Elizabeth Schools.  Prior to that she worked as a private behavior consultant in schools throughout southern New Hampshire and Southern Maine.  She attended UMaine-Farmington where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Special Education and she earned her Master’s of Ed degree in Special Education - Curriculum and Instruction with a BCBA certification focus from Arizona State University.  On a personal note, Sonia has a passion for ensuring that all students in special education are connected in meaningful ways within our school community and have the opportunity to thrive as they graduate from high school.  


Katrina Primeau

Katrina Primeau has worked in special education for more than 20 years with varied experiences, beginning with early intervention, Day Treatment Center special education teacher, Public School Developmental Consultant and Life Skills Classrooms teacher and Behavior Consultant. She earned her Bachelor's degree from Mary Washington College, her Master's degree from George Mason University and a Postgraduate certificate in Behavior Analysis from Florida Tech.  Katrina is passionate about DEI work within schools, relationship based learning, as well as making educational opportunities accessible to all students.

Erika Boulware

Director of Mental and Behavioral Health

With over a decade of experience in mental health services, clinical supervision, and educational leadership, Erika currently serves as the Director of Mental and Behavioral Health.  In this role, she leads district initiatives focused on comprehensive school mental health systems and social-emotional learning. She collaborates closely with administrators, mental health providers, and community stakeholders to establish an equity-oriented vision for the department, ensuring accessible mental health resources across the district.

Previously, Erika was the Assistant Director of Clinical Supports for Portland Public Schools and Director of Student Services at Pathfinder Regional Vocational Technical High School and District in Western MA, where she championed compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and led diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. Deeply passionate about antiracism work, Erika led the Pathfinder Equity Council in addressing unconscious bias, systemic change, and inclusive practices across the school community. She also guided the district’s Social Emotional Learning team, developed student support protocols, and supervised special education and English Learner programming.

Erika has also taught as an adjunct faculty member at Westfield State University’s School of Social Work, mentoring MSW students in advanced practice and emphasizing reflective, inclusive approaches to in-field learning. Her background includes roles as a School Social Worker at Holyoke High School and a Clinical Therapist with The Providence Center, where she provided therapeutic support and led interdisciplinary teams to address student barriers to success.

In addition to these roles, Erika has experience in emergency psychiatric services, research at Yale University, and project management at Planned Parenthood of Southern New England, as well as bilingual services as an interpreter. Across all roles, Erika has prioritized equity and antiracist principles, developing culturally responsive programs and fostering community collaboration to provide holistic support for youth and families.

Andrew Wallace has been South Portland Schools' Director of Technology for the past 22+ years. He is President of the Maine Educational Technology Directors Association (METDA) and represents Maine schools on the Forum of the National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES). He has a passion for supporting teachers with digital resources and instructional spaces that encourage the efficient and purposeful use of technology.

Erica is a mom, a partner, an athlete, and a champion for growing opportunity through education.

Hermenegildo Paulo (He/Him/His) is a dedicated educator and the DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) Director for the South Portland School District. With over 20 years of teaching experience, Hermenegildo has worked both in the U.S. and Angola, bringing a wealth of international experience and cultural insight to his work. His background includes roles as a math educator and an assistant principal, alongside support staff positions in Portland School District, where he developed his passion for fostering inclusive and equitable learning environments.

Fluent in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, Hermenegildo is committed to engaging multilingual communities and creating spaces where every student and family feels valued and respected. His work focuses on building strong community connections, promoting equity, and ensuring that all students, regardless of their background, have the opportunities and support they need to succeed.

As DEI Director, Hermenegildo leads efforts to create transformative, inclusive practices across the district, with a vision of equity and belonging for all.

Director of Multilingual Programs

April Perkins is the Director of Multilingual Programs for South Portland Schools. She holds a BA in French and German from the University of Maine and an MA in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from the University of Central Florida. After serving as a US State Department English Language Fellow in Libya in 2009-10 and Morocco in 2012, she spent four years in Egypt, where she taught English and trained teachers at an Islamic university. In 2016, she returned to her home state of Maine, serving as the ESOL & Bilingual Programs Specialist for the Maine Department of Education for nearly six years. In addition to speaking French and German, she also speaks intermediate Egyptian Arabic and some Spanish.

Mike Nalli is the Director of Operations and Safety for the South Portland School Department.  In this role, he oversees the Transportation, Facilities, Food Service, and Safety Departments.  Prior to joining South Portland Schools, Mike served in the United States Coast Guard for over 20 years, conducting a wide range of at-sea operations in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.  Mike returned to his home state of Maine after retiring from the Coast Guard, and feels fortunate to serve his local community in this new capacity.  Mike earned a Bachelor of Arts from Stonehill College and a Master of Business Administration from Boston University.

Athletic Director

Todd Livingston was hired as the athletic director at his alma mater in the fall of 2011.  Prior to this he served as the athletic director at Falmouth HS/MS from 2007-2011 and as the assistant athletic director at Greely HS/MS from 2003-2007.  Prior to becoming an athletic director, he taught health & physical education for eleven years. In addition to teaching, he held coaching roles at various levels in the sports of baseball, basketball and soccer.  He attended the University of Maine, Orono where he earned a BS in Health, Physical Education & Recreation Education and in 2005 earned an MS in Education from the University of New England. He has also earned Certified Athletic Administrator & Certified Master Athletic Administrator certifications from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.  Todd also serves as the Maine Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association assistant director for leadership training & certification.

Shawn Perry has been the Director of the School Nutrition Program with the South Portland School Department since 2021. Shawn has a strong passion for food and nutrition, health and wellness. He has worked in a variety of food service management industry settings for 20 years including healthcare, long term care and rehabilitation, school nutrition, retail food service, community dietetics, and has worked as a food and nutrition advisor for the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

He attended West Chester University of Pennsylvania earning his Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics and earned his Master’s of Science Degree in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine at the University of Western States. He also holds certification as a Certified Dietary Manager Certified Food Protection Professional with the Association of Nutrition and Foodservice Professionals, Certified School Nutrition Specialist with the School Nutrition Association, Certified with the National Restaurant Association, and is an active member with the Maine School Nutrition Association.
