Weather Related Closures & Delays
How will we be contacted when there is a closure or delay? Will we receive a phone call?
You will not receive a phone call about snow delays/closures. Families will receive an email and text about school closures from the superintendent. Cancellation and delay information will also be available on:
Channels 6, 8, and 13
District website (spsdme.org)
District app (download information is here)
What time should we expect a decision to be made?
Decisions on school cancellations/delays will usually be made by 5:15 am. Because of specific weather conditions, the decision may be made a bit later in the morning, or earlier.
How long is a weather-related delay?
We will continue to use a two-hour delayed start as an option this winter. (We have used a one-hour delay in exceptional circumstances in the past, but this is unlikely to be used for weather conditions.)
How do I know what contact information my child’s school has for communicating with me?
Please contact your child’s school to update your contact information. You can verify we have the correct information by checking what’s currently in our ReachMyTeach communications system here. Follow these instructions to verify the email and phone number we contact.
Please be sure to contact your child’s school to make an update, as fixing your own information within ReachMyTeach may lead to it being overwritten the following day.
Who gets contacted if there is a school cancellation?
Guardians of students attending South Portland Schools will be notified.
I am not a guardian of a student actively enrolled in South Portland Schools. Where can I find cancellation information?

Are remote learning days an option in place of snow days?
We will consider the possibility of remote school days after the fifth closure or delay.
