SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – June 11, 2024 – South Portland High School has been awarded a $5,000 grant to support its competitive robotics program from Consolidated Communications’ Consolidated Connects Educational Grant Program. Consolidated joined students, teachers and faculty in celebrating the grant award at a check presentation during the South Portland School Department Board Meeting on Monday, June 10.

This grant will support students from South Portland High School as they develop technology skills, opening up future opportunities for education and employment.  Members of the FIRST Robotics Team 58 – The Riot Crew work in collaboration with mentors and engineers to design, build, and test robots to participate in local, regional and national competitions.

“Team 58, the South Portland High School FIRST robotics team, is thrilled to have received a generous grant from Consolidated Communications in support of our program,” said Lori Gaudreau, Team 58 mentor. “This will allow our team to purchase materials and equipment that can be used not only for building our robot during the upcoming season, but also to enhance our training program. Learning the technical skills that they need to design and build a robot within a short period of time gives our students an advantage as they look to enter STEM careers.”

“Through our Consolidated Connects Educational Grant Program we are increasing access for students to learn, grow and thrive through programs like competitive robotics at South Portland High School,” said Sarah Davis, vice president of market development for Consolidated. “Investing in education initiatives like this makes our communities stronger and Consolidated is proud to support the South Portland community and its youth through this grant.”

The Consolidated Connects Educational Grant Program funds K-12 schools within the company’s service area that provide innovative, technology-focused learning programs to advance creative student learning, develop 21st century skills and promote critical thinking. Since 2021, the program has granted more than $160,000 to 52 schools, impacting more than 14,500 students in the company’s service area.
