SPMS Afterschool Options, 23-24

As a community school, one of our goals is to grow enrichment and out-of-school-time opportunities for both students and families. We know that students who participate in afterschool programs are more likely to have better school achievement and attendance and less likely to engage in risky behaviors. We want to make sure that the offerings we provide align with the needs of our community, and so this fall we will continue our engagement with families and community members through focus groups, surveys, and conversations to make sure we are planning the programs that you are looking for. In the meantime, we are excited to announce Fall 2023 afterschool offerings.

We have 4 types of afters chool offerings:

  1. Clubs: Clubs meet once a week or once every two weeks after school for 1 hour. Club advisors are generally school staff and occasionally community partners. Clubs are free for students and are on a drop-in basis. Students don’t need to sign up; they just need to show up! Club options will be shared in late August.  Linked here are 5th and 6th Grade Clubs and Activities. Linked here are 7th and 8th grade Clubs and Activities.

  2. Sports: Sports meet on a seasonal basis and are free to students. To learn more about our athletic offerings and to sign up for sports, click here.

  3. Enrichment: Enrichment programs are short-term (4-8 weeks) programs that meet one or two days a week and are run by our community partners such as RippleEffect, The Telling Room, and STEAMWorks. There will be a nominal cost and scholarships will be available. We will be offering one or two enrichment programs this fall with an intention to offer many more in the spring. Stay tuned for more information!

  4. Extended Day Program for 5th and 6th graders: We are piloting an extended day program with the Boys and Girls Club! They will be offering 25 spots of after school care, M-F, from 3:00 until 5:30. The cost is $75/week and students can be signed up for either the fall or spring semester or both! Admission will be through a lottery that ensures our registration is similar to our school demographics. Scholarships are available based on income. Students who participate in this program will also be able to participate in after school clubs, sports, and enrichment activities. Click here for more information.
