The Board of Education encourages the active interest and involvement of parents and citizens in our schools. In order to avoid interruption of the instructional programs and to promote the safety of students and staff, building principals shall institute administrative procedures concerning visitors to the schools. Such procedures shall be subject to the approval of the Superintendent. The term “visitor” shall apply to any person on school grounds or in school buildings who is not an employee or student of the South Portland School Department.
Building administrators have the responsibility and authority for determining the authorization of visitors to the building or school grounds.
All visitors shall report to the school’s main office upon arrival at the school at which time they shall sign in and pick up a “Visitor Badge”. The Visitor Badge is to be worn and displayed at all times while visiting within the school. A clearly marked sign should be displayed at all entrances making known this requirement.
Unauthorized Persons in School Building or on School Property
Visitors shall comply with all applicable Board of Education policies and school rules. Visitors who violate these policies / rules and/or disrespect the safe and orderly operation of the school shall be asked to leave the premises.
The building administrator has the responsibility and authority for determining the authorization of visitors to the building or school grounds and to refuse entry to school grounds or buildings to persons who do not have legitimate, school-related business and/or who may disrupt the operations of the school. This may include, but not be limited to, the news media, profit-making businesses, fundraisers and other organizations seeking access to students and/or staff.
All school personnel are expected to assist the building administration by informing the office of any unauthorized persons who are in the building or on the school grounds.
People not displaying a badge will be directed to the main office for proper authorization to visit in the school.
Should the person refuse to follow this request, the administrator will immediately be notified of his/her presence
Failure to leave the building upon request shall be sufficient cause to inform the visitor that the police will be called.
